Just as God gave Abram and Sarai new names, their grandson Jacob was given a new name: Israel, meaning “God commands”. However, both Israel and his descendants did not always allow God to command. At such times, God’s Word reverts to the original term, Jacob. Those who are in Christ have been given a new name as well: saints. And unlike Jacob, that name — and that nature — will never be revoked. [Tom Burke]
